DRIVING DESOTO

We are tired of sitting in traffic. DeSoto County is constantly ranked one of the most congested and gridlocked regions in the entire state of Mississippi, and the reason is simple:

  • Our main entry and exit points simply are not wide enough to handle nearly 200,000 cars a day (I-55 in DeSoto County alone has 75,000 cars each day).
  • I-55, Hwy 51 and Hwy 305 are the main entry points into North Mississippi for workers, residents, tourists, truckers and everyone else in DeSoto, Tate, Panola, Lafayette, and many other locations.
  • Even as our population growth has outpaced the rest of Mississippi, the widening of these roads has been ignored. For population and economic growth to continue in DeSoto County, the state and federal government must prioritize our state and federal highways.
  • North Mississippi cities and counties are suffering from lost opportunities to grow jobs and population due to these outdated highways.

ABOUT US

OUR MISSION

To create a grassroots organization dedicated to supporting real solutions to solve our highway infrastructure crisis. We are bringing together leaders from the business community, public officials and individual communities leaders to help us take our message to the leadership in Jackson and Washington.

Our mission is clear – to ensure a plan is created that widens the main entry points into DeSoto County. We will make sure this plan is successfully implemented, constructed, and made available to citizens and commuters as soon as possible to help ensure we keep our economic and population growth in the state.

WHAT DOES THE NEW DRIVING DESOTO PLAN LOOK LIKE?

WHO WE ARE

We are Mississippians, businesses of all sizes, commuters, and community organizations who have had enough of sitting in traffic that is constantly ranked one of the worst in the state. We are joining together to ensure that Mississippi elected officials and decision makers understand how important this project is and how much community support it has.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT

Every day countless Mississippians are forced to sit in hours of traffic just to get back and forth from their jobs. And for decades little to nothing has been done to really address it. It doesn’t have to be this way. Other states in the region have figured this out, Alabama’s elected officials did what was necessary to get people moving again and out of seemingly endless traffic. DeSoto now has a plan – Driving DeSoto – and it’s time to make sure it gets done.

Data from the most recent census showed that 24,260 new people moved to DeSoto County over the last decade. DeSoto County was the number one new destination for people moving into Mississippi. The county & state can’t continue to grow like we have over the past 10+ years if we don’t modernize & expand our highways.

Traffic jam in a city with long queue of cars waiting on a road at sunset. Concept of stress from being late during commute. Street crowded with stopped vehicles.

WHAT DO WE WANT?

We want the state and federal government to prioritize widening I-55, Hwy 51 and Hwy 305 so that we can get moving again. For decades we have watched our constituents sit in traffic and done very little about it. There has been a lot of talk about the problem but solutions are few and far between. This is simple – DeSoto Countians want the Driving DeSoto Plan implemented, built, and made available to all Mississippians as soon as possible so we can get our major highways widened.
